Can Stouffville be a Water Smart Town?

I like to read.

Since becoming Mayor, I find myself reading more books and articles on planning. Planning our community to be more walkable, safe, smart, & innovative.

Recently, I read a Bloomberg article on How to build a Water Smart city.

It really got me thinking. As we plan our growth out to 2051, where we will grow to over 100000 people, can we implement water conservation strategies in new developments that will benefit not only the town, but you as residents?

So, I asked staff for their thoughts on what tools we may have through the planning process to ask developers to plan for water conservation. Is there a way to encourage or require greywater systems in new homes for toilets and/or garden sprinklers? Is there a way to direct rain water from roof tops into a “cistern” that can irrigate public parks & spaces? The impacts on our environment could be huge, not to mention the cost savings in water bills!

As we look to the future, we need to start thinking about how the planning decisions today can impact our communities in 50-100 years.
